Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high. Luke 24:49
The disciples did wait, and The Book of Acts chapter two tells us about the outpouring of the Holy Spirit with evidence of speaking in tongues. The church was born – there was only one – and that church was Pentecostal through and through!
Within several hundred years, after the death of the apostles and the death of their disciples, the presence of glossolalia and charismatic gifts was rare. There would be outbursts, sudden occurrence here and there from time to time, but nothing like the apostolic days… until the twentieth century, and the world would again experience Pentecost afresh and new. The Assemblies of God was born in the atmosphere of that awakening and revival.
